Classification of explosive-

A) Classification as per Indian explosive Rules:-

Class 1 - Gunpowder
Class 2 - Nitrate mixture
Class 3 - Nitro compounds
 Division 1-Blasting geletine, special geletine.
 Division 2 - P.E.T.N., TNT, Primax, etc.
Class 4 - Chlorate mixture
Class 5 - Fulminate
Class 6 -
Division I - safety fuse, igniter cord, safety electric fuse, etc

Division II - plastic igniter cord, detonating cord/fuse, electric fuse, etc.

Division III - detonator, delay detonator, electric detonator, relay.

Class 7 - Fire works.
Class 8 - Liquid oxygen explosive (LOX)

B) Classification Based on risk involve in initiation:-

Category X - explosive having fire or slight explosion risk

Category Y - explosive having a mass fire risk or a moderate explosion risk not the risk of mass explosion.

Category Z - explosive having a mass explosion risk and messile effect.

C) On the Basis of strength:-

i) Low explosive - Gunpowder
ii) High explosive - Slurry, Emulsion, Dynamite, etc.

D) Classification on the Basis of use -

i) Permitted explosive - for use in u/g gassy coal or non-coal excavation.

ii) Non permitted explosive -

a) small dia (NPSD) - for use in hole of 32mm dia, drill by manually or by jack hammer.

b) large dia (NPLD) - for use in hole of 100 mm dia.

E) On the Basis of sensitivity of an explosive to initiation by a detonator :-

i) Cap sensitive - are those explosive which can be detonated by a No.8 detonator.

Example- all permitted, all non permitted small dia, large dia booster, primers, etc.

ii) Non Cap sensitive - are those explosive which can not be detonated by detonator and need a cap sensitive explosive for detonation.

Example - ANFO, Large dia column charge.
